Tonight my cats ate a raw duck tongue. In some cultures, wouldn’t that be a delicacy?
Many of you know that I’m a big fan of properly prepared raw food diets. (And commercial raw food diets are safer & more likely to be “property prepared” than home-made. Raw Advantage is my top commercial raw diet choice.) Someday I’ll write about the scientific, nutritional reasons why my cats get raw food.
However, I eat very little meat myself. VERY little. I haven’t even cooked raw meet since I was an ungrad, 20+ years ago. So feeding raw meat to my cats has been a bigger adjustment for me than it would be for many people.
Every now & then when I’m feeding large grind raw food (instead of the fine ground pate), I see recognizable bits. Tonight I saw the most icky (to me) bit: a little tongue. It was in a duck & yam formula. I’m sure it wasn’t a yam tongue… So… Uhhhhh…
I don’t know if I will ever look at ducks again without apologizing. And then thanking them for becoming my cats’ wonderful food.
the Rad Cat is pretty bloody, but i am used to it now.
i just starting feeding a brand called Oma’s Pride. have you heard of it? i just discovered it last week. i must say the product looks amazing – very high quality ingredients and my cats really seem to like like it. however, it comes from the east coast so it is not the most local of choices.
it took some time to get my cats to eat a partial raw diet and was really happy when they started eating Rad Cat Raw. i have now started incorporating other raw products into their diet and agree that Raw Advantage is a great choice.
i myself am a meat eater and didn’t think the transition to raw would be hard, but opening a tub of bloody turkey meat to feed my cats has proved a bit more difficult than i thought it would! however, my cats look great, litter box odor has been reduced and they seem to have more energy. so all told, i am happy.
Which manufacturer makes food that’s a bit bloody? I couldn’t handle bloody meat. I think that would gross me out more than the tongue.
For a while I couldn’t feed them one product that had beets in it cuz the beets made things so red – it looked bloody to me. I knew it wasn’t blood, but it took a long time for me to get past that concept. (Silly human.)
Several of my cats took to raw food immediately. Others took many months before tasting it. Some prefer the pate style raw, but others don’t seem to care. To each his own, I reckon.
